Darden North, author of murder mysteries and thriller novels.
A native of the Mississippi Delta, Darden North, MD, is a board-certified physician in obstetrics and gynecology and the national award-winning author of mystery and thriller novels, most notably an IPPY for Southern Fiction. He is a physician partner in fulltime practice at Jackson Healthcare for Women in Jackson, Mississippi. While still delivering babies, he is a certified daVinci robotic surgeon in gynecology, serving as local director of the American Institute of Minimally Invasive Surgery. His writing and publishing career began at the University of Mississippi as Editor-in-Chief of the 1978 Ole Miss yearbook and continued for the 1982 Medic. He presently serves on the Editorial Advisory Board of the Journal of the Mississippi State Medical Association and as an Associate Editor of the Obstetrics & Gynecology International Journal.
North has authored four published novels in the mystery and thriller genres, including Points of Origin, awarded in Southern Fiction by the Independent Publisher Book Awards and House Call, recognized as a finalist in Mystery/Suspense by the Next Generation Indie Book Awards. The screenplay of his nationally awarded third novel, Fresh Frozen, is in film development by Vitolo and Alvarez. The New York Journal of Books hailed North’s fourth novel, Wiggle Room, as: “North’s action-packed style … is headed for the silver screen.” The News-Star defined North’s “... uncanny character development along classic southern lines” and the Oxford Eagle reviewed North’s Fresh Frozen as “…medical suspense that puts Robin Cook on notice.” According to international bestselling author Peter James: “Darden North writes vividly, with strong pace, action and emotion, counterbalanced with sharp observations and wry humour.”
Darden North has conducted workshops on constructing mysteries and thrillers at writing seminars and contributed to several author panels including “Celebrate Literacy -The Magic of Books,” “The Southern Expressions Conference,” “Murder in the Magic City," “Author! Author! Celebration of the Written Word,” “Thriller Author Panel – SIBA,” and “Murder on the Menu.” He is also available for book clubs.
Prior to attending medical school, North was a magna cum laude graduate of the University of Mississippi, vice-president of the Associated Student Body, president of the Interfraternity Council and Order of Omega and a member of Kappa Alpha Order and Omicron Delta Kappa. North was the first male inducted into Mortar Board at Ole Miss and was named into the Hall of Fame. Growing up in Cleveland, Mississippi, he worked in lawn maintenance, ran a community pool concession stand, waited tables, and taught swimming lessons before graduating from medical school.
Several years ago, Darden North tossed a failed try at swinging golf clubs for a laptop and writing. In his spare time, he gardens, walks for exercise, reads and listens to fiction, enjoys his friends, and travels with family. North lives with wife Sally in Jackson, and they have two young adult children, two dogs, and two grand dogs. He is busy writing a fifth novel.
